Fashion comeback
Fashion is like history and keeps repeating itself. Dhotis which were once ‘in’, about three decades ago and have come back in fashion again. There are some really trendy prints that you can go in for. Team it up with a neutral coloured top.
Masculine looking jackets are also a top pick this season. You can create one at home by adding shoulder pads on one of your man’s well fitted jacket.
With the military jacket, has followed the military boots. Available in a lot of stores these bulky black boots can be teamed up with an ultra feminine dress or skirt to create that contrast.
Fashion seems to be going androgynous full throttle. Having a look at the trends, the masculine touch seems riding high on feminine fashion. Gender stereotypes are being re-moulded and the sharp line between the two has definitely blurred. Infact, this trend is not new-born, wives way back in the 1940′s wore her husband’s clothes since it was thought to be cheaper to share clothes during the World War II.
Have a look at the ramp and you will see that designer’s are incorporating men’s designs in women’s clothing. Trousers with gathers or baggy jeans are being seen as an alternative to skinny jeans or leggings. The season tells you to drop the ‘ohh so propah’ look and try out something comfortable and laid back.
Taking a cue from the international stage, Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts have been seen wearing in what is quintessentially called the ‘boyfriend jeans’. They’re loose-fitting, comfortable and usually rolled up at the hem. What may surprise a lot of us is that even though these jeans are called ‘boyfriend jeans’, they are specially made for women themselves. They have a narrow waist and are curvy at the bottom. So a man possibly cannot wear them.
Designer Siddi Mapxencar is all in for men’s accessories and quips, “Wearing a guy’s belt with that rugged, worn out and vintage look would look chic on semi fit women’s trouser. The broad shape of a belt would also give an androgynous look for the same. Try going in for a guy’s cap. It would go well with a loose or semi-fit tees. A perfect look for a day outing while protecting you from scorching heat of summer at the same time.”
Uni-sexual fashion gets a thumbs-up from designer Babita Malkani who says she loves borrowing red coloured tees from her hubbies wardrobe and uses it to suit her style. “Even though my husband prefers dressing up simply, he has some great things that I usually dig at. A man’s white shirt can be played around with in a numerous ways. I go in for white textured and patch work in men’s t-shirts. They do make for a style statement”, she says.
Come summer and can the terrible heat be far behind? With summers approaching sister designer Riddhi Mapxencar says, “Loose fitting shorts with patch pockets in a bright colour is a perfect summer outfit. You can team it up with a fitted t-shirt, a printed one or just white shirt to give a summery feel.” What you need to keep in mind is the length of these shorts. Girls who are not that tall should avoid wearing ones that go below their knees since they will be cutting the leg length making them look shorter. Such shorts can be seen worn by boys who play sports like basket ball.
This look is usually experimented by the younger lot in the age group between 18 to 25. Unlike before when people tagged a girl wearing boy’s clothes as a tomboy, nowadays it is considered cool. It is all about carrying off the look. Malkani feels, “Wearing really loose kurtas with Sanskrit prints has been a big rage with men. Women should try wearing the same with a nice jazzy scarf to add some zing to the outfit.”
The key is to be confident. And just in case you really want to make heads turn, you can wear your guy’s underwear on top of your jeans on days when you feel like a superwoman!
